Trauma art by Genendy shown in “Unkept Secrets,” a documentary chronicling her struggle as an alleged survivor of brutal ongoing rape by her own father and shunning by her family and community.
Art by Genendy depicting her trauma. Screenshots from documentary are provided under Fair Use for the purpose of teaching researchers what survivor art looks like (Kim Noble, Sarah Ruth Ashcraft, Ally Carter). The first image is redacted to hide graphic imagery; the second is cropped to emphasize that the father, a rabbi, represented Judaism to her; and third is cropped to emphasize dissociation (mental “boxes”). She explains this in the movie. The fourth obviously shows her recollection of her father lying on top of her (see his photo at the top of this blog). The fifth is her crying, prone, petrified face.
