In response to the comment “is it really necessary to post this” — the answer is an emphatic yes. Child molesters are a small portion of the population but their compulsion to offend and reoffend is extremely high. They are also notoriously polite and socially skilled, and tend to ingratiate themselves at the higher levels of their social circles. This is all part of the same criminal method of operation — a way to create the conditions to unleash the sick mind. The combination of a compulsion to repeat the crime combined with the veneer of beneficence is especially threatening to the Jewish community. Our culture tends to prize skepticism, “evidence” and giving people the benefit of the doubt. You can’t do that with these people. They simply aren’t safe around kids and cannot be admitted to shul. The level of disbelief around the prominent and connected Roth was so high that he literally pleasured himself in front of an entire bunk full of children at camp and nothing happened. Nowadays the awareness level should be so much higher, but unfortunately I don’t think it’s anywhere close to where it needs to be. Schools, camps, shuls, everywhere kids are — the institution must have a child-first mentality not a self-protective mentality. Not an attitude of avoiding “distress,” discomfort, and scandal. Where the safety of any human being is concerned, recognize that evil people prey when you look away.
