So every week I talk to my parents either before or after Shabbos.
And every week for the past couple of weeks my mother has asked me when I am going to officially “drop it” as in stop beating this agunah topic to death.
Today, after announcing previously that I was going to move on, I am REALLY ACTUALLY moving on.
But this whole thing got me to thinking. What is it about the topic that got me so mad in the first place? There are crazy people all over town, why bother to get exercised?
And I think I have the answer.
This was a case of someone trying to turn evil completely normal. And of the Jewish community basically accepting it.
Do you see an article in any of the major Jewish publications about the nudity campaign?
Did your local rabbi dedicate his speech on Shabbos to the importance of staying within the bounds of the Torah, even if we are angry, even if there are things which really must be changed?
No. Of course not.
Nobody wants to be identified as anti-feminist.
This kind of weakness, this utter cowardice, in the face of someone who says I KNOW I AM BEING EVIL, IT’S TO EXPOSE HOW EVIL YOU ARE, is even worse than Shabsai Tzvi, who didn’t come to the Jews claiming a moral wrong to be righted.
By abdicating their duty to the Jewish community, not only has an innocent man and his family been turned upside down, but a serious tear has been introduced into the fabric of Jewish life.
This tear is the result of the fake feminist movement. It is no longer just an add-on. It is in fact a direct attack on the legitimacy of Halacha.
Nobody set out to do this, but there it is.
My new book, From Tyranny to Freedom, is a lengthy, complex, multifaceted analysis of how situations like FlatbushGirl come to pass and what we can do about it.
I hope to talk about it more in the days to come.
Until my mother calls me up and tells me to “drop it.” 😂
