President Trump’s exact words regarding Cornell University and the associated student sexual assault allegations:
- Regarding the initial questions about the university and the case: “Well, I don’t know that much about it, but I think Cornell’s a fine school and I’m sure they’ll do what’s right.”
- Regarding the involvement of New York Attorney General Letitia James as a special prosecutor in the case: “Letitia James is a corrupt person. She’s totally corrupt, and I can’t imagine it. And I feel badly for whoever she’s looking at because they won’t get a fair shake. Letitia James is a corrupt person.”
Not a word of support for Jane Doe or the countless women who have come forward about Cornell specifically, campus rape generally, and their own victimization more broadly, going back decades and decades.
I had thought that new revelations about political weaponization by the Democrats would make an impact, but the women’s issue is more immediate and impactful politically. The damage is done here—it is being reported that the President cares for rapists and not victims. (All are innocent until proven guilty.)
Unless this is addressed, the midterms are going to be a complete and total, sweeping disaster for the Republicans.
