No one mentions this, but after the leaked snippets, Doe messages Ingalls with a screenshot of a forum post talking about her having being assaulted by multiple men after her threesome, with the caption “???”. Ingalls tells her it didn’t happen. That’s when she begins to realize.
This reinforces my view that she was assaulted while incapacitated, and did not have an immediate memory of being assaulted. At the time of the snippets she only remembers, knows, and is talking about her consensual threesome. She believes this is what people are talking about.
She finds the forum post after she talks about feeling ashamed. She does not become hostile to Ingalls and co at any point when she feels (as she describes it, cripplingly) humiliated (“crying all day”). She does NOT actually turn on them when she experiences serious regret.
She actually also talks to them about her reputation having been decimated. When she sends them those texts, again, she is friendly, and does not appear in any way aggravated by them. She seems to view them as emotionally supportive. So this didn’t change her mind either.
She only starts doubting them after she reads that other people had sex with her when she was out, in the forum post, but doesn’t immediately believe it. Very instructively, she describes being gangbanged as a rumour, and in context as “people changing the narrative”.
Ingalls, recall, also claimed the situation described by the forum post was a fabulation, and even talked about “reporting it”. After that point things progress quickly. The immediately next day she declines a call from Ingalls and tells him that “I know you lied”.
Now what did she think he lied about, huh? The same day she tells Newell that 90% of that night was non-consensual and, in that context, that the only and last memory she actually had was doing ketamine off of him. Are you putting two and two together yet?
In the leaked texts that apologists are spreading, she is not yet aware more people had sex with her at all. She thinks she is talking about her threesome, and describes people talking about her “gangbang” as spreading a rumour and “changing the narrative”.
She begins to change her mind only after seeing the forum post, which we do not have access to, where there appears to have been testimony from other students that she was assaulted by a group at the fraternity house.
Ingalls and Newell do their best to try to keep her thinking this is a rumour (including the phone call where Ingalls hilariously claims they may have just imagined the crowd), but she becomes convinced it is true, and then finds out about the group chat messages advertising her.
That’s why she tells them that she knows they lied. They claimed a bunch of things about the crowd, but she found out they in fact had invited many people up specifically to have sex with her, and that many of them did this throughout the night without her consent or awareness.
The chat thus corroborated the forum post. A number of these men (to the university she speculated about up to ten) had sex with her after she became incapacitated, after the 7 “shut things down” by moving her to a different room and proposing that they… do more ketamine.
That’s why she couldn’t square people talking about her having had a gangbang with her actual memory of her threesome. That’s why she tells Newell that 90% of the night was non-consensual. She only remembered the beginning of the night.
If a group had sex with her over several hours as people were saying (the 90% of the 7 hour night) she had no recollection of this, and had not consented to it. It is only when the snippets are out of order, and the forum post is ellided, that she seems to abruptly claim this.
But it makes perfect sense in order. She is not talking about the same thing any more. At first she is talking about something she regarded as consensual, then she is talking about something she didn’t realize happened at all, and had to learn was done to her, literally, online.
Once she finds out that the night did not end with her doing ketamine with the guys and passing out (that is, about that 90% being a real thing that they conspired to organise) she immediately changes her mind, cuts contact with them and files her complaint within exactly a day.
Very obviously what did the work here is that she became aware of the chat group messages where her friends are explicitly calling on people to have sex with her, and this corroborated the forum post that she was initially persuaded by Ingalls was a mean-spirited fabrication.
She didn’t waste time, and didn’t attempt to ingratiate herself to her abusers. Like Pelicot, she filed the complaint immediately after learning what actually happened. Is it a wonder the inciting event of her realization is absent from a discussion dominated by apologetics?
You see, Jane Doe thought her friends would protect her. She thought she’d have a good time with them, and then they’d tuck her in. Alas, her friends were traitors and instead waited for her most vulnerable to sell her out to their slobbering loser friends for brownie points.”
