Qatar has openly (Alan Bender deposition, 2019) declared its intention to buy the White House. I thought President Trump would stop them. I was wrong. Eric Trump, Donald Trump Jr., and Jared Kushner have all done business there or received funding from Qatar via direct or indirect channels.
Recall that during his presidency, Barack Obama maintained a close strategic partnership with Qatar—which hosts the largest U.S. military base in the Middle East—cooperating on the Libya intervention, the campaign against ISIS, and regional diplomacy while also supporting Qatar’s establishment of a Hamas political office in Doha as a channel for indirect communications.
Recall also that the Obama administration markedly shifted longstanding U.S. policy by actively engaging the Muslim Brotherhood after the 2011 Arab Spring, inviting its members as special guests to the 2009 Cairo speech, formally opening diplomatic contacts in 2011, and describing the group as largely non-violent or moderate despite its historical ties to militants and Hamas. This outreach, combined with continued military and economic aid to Egypt and acceptance of the Brotherhood’s electoral victories—culminating in Mohamed Morsi’s 2012 presidency—provided international legitimacy and practical support that helped the organization consolidate power during Egypt’s brief democratic experiment, until the 2013 military coup.
